An interview with The Boathouse Wedding Co-ordinator, Kizia McLean

Securing your wedding venue is usually one of the first major wedding planning decisions that a newly engaged couple will make. Location, cost, style and services should be the top of mind when starting your dream wedding venue search. I had the opportunity of interviewing The Boathouse's amazing wedding co-ordinator, Kizia McLean. In this interview, I asked all the questions that you would ideally like answered on your first meeting with them.

1. What is the overall vibe of The Boathouse venues?

A boutique set of waterside venues, with a focus on creating experiences that people love. We strive to always deliver an exceptional service with an unbeatable product. We place a huge importance on having a personal experience with our couples and always keeping the promise of going above and beyond for their special day. To narrow down on our point of difference it would be to always exceed expectations.

2. How many venues do you have?

Looking at the Group as a whole we look after 9 venues in total, however our weddings are mainly held at 5 of these venues.

Manly Pavilion

Located on the beautiful West Esplanade in the heart of Manly. Within this venue we have our dedicated Weddings + Events Space which is the Harbour Room on the Lower Level as well as our Manly Pavilion restaurant which is located on the Upper Level of Manly Pavilion. In the Harbour Room we can accommodate up to 200 guests seated and 250 guests in a canape style. With regards to Manly Pavilion Restaurant, the capacity for this space varies depending on which space the couple is interested in or if they would like to hire the restaurant exclusively that allows for a stunning terrace ceremony overlooking the Harbour.

The Boathouse, Shelly Beach

Located on the west-facing Shelly Beach in Manly. Within this venue we have our dedicated Weddings + Events Space which is the upper level of The Boathouse, Shelly Beach as well as our café which is available for exclusive hire for evening Wedding + Events on the lower level. On the upper level of The Boathouse, Shelly Beach we can accommodate up to 60 guests seated and 120 guests in a canape style. On the lower level of The Boathouse, Shelly Beach we can accommodate up to 80 guests seated as well as 200 guests for a canape style event.

The Boathouse, Palm Beach

Located on Pittwater in Palm Beach, Sydney. We can accommodate up to 30 guests for a seated style event and up to 200 guests in a canape style.

The Boathouse, Rose Bay

Located on the stunning Rose Bay Marina, Sydney. Within this venue we have two spaces – the Kiosk as well as The Boathouse, Rose Bay Restaurant. The Kiosk can accommodate up to 100 guests in a canape style. We can accommodate up to 80 guests seated and up to 120 guests in a canape style within The Boathouse, Rose Bay Restaurant.

Moby Dicks, Whale Beach

Set on the hill overlooking Whale Beach in Sydney. We can accommodate up to 150 guests seated and up to 200 guests in a canape style.

3. What is the booking and planning process for couples?

We have a dedicated Wedding + Events team that invite all couples to view our venues to find the perfect fit for them. Once they have decided on a venue for their special day, we provide them with the next steps which includes all of the necessary booking & planning paperwork to start their journey. Our team is always here for questions and anything they need along the way.

4. How far in advance do you suggest couples book?

Being by the water we see a massive increase in the demand over Spring, Summer + Autumn months. In saying this we have built our venues, so they are just as beautiful in the Winter months, and often we have a seasonal offer available during the winter months. Weekends are always the first to fill and at some of our venues are booked up to 16 - 18 months in advance .

5. Which venues allow for ceremony and reception on site?

The following Boathouse venues allow for ceremony and reception on site: Manly Pavilion, The Boathouse Shelly Beach, The Boathouse Rose Bay and Moby Dicks, Whale Beach.

6. What food and beverage options are available to those choosing to get married at The Boathouse?

We offer an all-inclusive Food, Beverage + Venue Hire package across most of our venues to streamline the main costs involved. With regards to our Food offering, we place a huge importance on an abundance of fresh, seasonal menus with an emphasis on a premium seafood offering. We provide a shared family style of food service, with a unique offering of canapes to start - served as roaming entrée rather than seated. This encourages guests to mingle and enjoy the atmosphere of a cocktail hour on arrival at the venue. We provide a variety of wine selections to allow couple’s to have the flexibility to tailor the beverage package to suit them.

7. Do you have a wedding co-ordinator / planner that each couple works with at The Boathouse?

We sure do! We have dedicated coordinators for each venue, they are experts at what they do, and they are there to help every step of the way! We have a planning process in place to ensure that the journey is enjoyable and stress-free which transfers through to a seamless wedding day with The Boathouse!

8. Does the venue have its own décor inventory

We have designed our package to include all of the standard items required for the reception, e.g. cutlery, crockery, menus, tables, chairs and linen. We also offer a bespoke opportunity to add on florals, styling items, ceremony styling, cakes and more - through The Boathouse - to streamline the process and ensure the couple’s vision for the day comes to life! We boast inspiring interiors, which include an abundance of plants, greenery + flowers around the venue. With regards to restrictions, our Wedding + Events team are always happy to work with the couple and provide feedback + advice with regards to styling on the day and what is possible.

9. What would you top tip be for a couple who are looking for a venue?

Ask all the questions! Make a of a list of questions you may have regarding the venue, and ask them all. Be sure that you are happy with ceremony locations and accommodation in relation to the venue, for logistical ease. It is also important to read reviews, to meet the team and get a feel for the venue. and envision yourself in the space with friends and family.
